Thoughts on dealing with the snow

As the snow melts and we all get back to our normal lives, I have a few thoughts on the snow:

1. Some people are unbelievably nice when they see their neighbors in trouble. We saw countless people towing people out of ditches, digging out others cars, driving doctors to the hospital, ect.

2. Some people are unbelievably rude when they see their neighbors in trouble. When you are going down a two way road that has been, by no ones fault, turned into a one way because of the snow, the kind thing is to back up and let the other person by. Unfortunately, some thought it would be better to stare the other car down until they moved.

3. Kids need time to be kids. My students had such wonderful stories from the time they were "snowed in". They loved using candles when the lights went out, sledding down countless hills, and making snow angels. Not once did they worry that they might not be ready for the state assessments... and that is how it should be.

4. The snow made me remember how powerless we really are. The snow doesn't care about your hair cut appointment, or the assignment you have due. It made everyone slow down.

Although it was a HUGE pain, I think more good came out of this historic storm then bad.

Cabin Fever

We are off school for the third straight day as round 2 of the “Snowpacalypse” hit us last night and is continuing through today. At our apartment, we had over 30 inches of snow on the ground and the storm today is expected to add another 18 on top of the that. In addition to the new snow, we are in the middle of blizzard conditions as 50 to 60 mph winds are blowing, essentially eliminating any visibility. This has caused the snow plows and electric crews to stop operations until the storm ends as they cannot see far enough to drive down the road. Thus, for now the fifth day in a row, we are literally snowed in. Here are a few activities we have done over the last couple days to keep us from going crazy.

1. Phase 10 – We have done a good job wearing out our Phase 10 deck. While Phase 10 is a great game, you can only play it so much before nasty comments come out, such as, “Anybody can get 7 in a row with 3 wild cards,” and “You knew damn well I was going for 7’s.” Needless to say, we have had to put the Phase 10 playing on hold.

2. Wii – Luckily we have a Wii system that has helped pass the time. Our favorite game for the week has been Mario Cart which we have been playing online against people from around the world. However, one can only take so much of getting lapped by a 10-year-old from Brussels.

3. Cleaning off Cars and Walking to the Store – To combat our cabin fever we have been able to get out for minimal activities such as dig our cars out or walk to the grocery store to re-stock on some essentials (beer). Although we have to trudge through 3 feet of snow to get back, this doesn’t cross our mind as each time we buy a suitcase of Bud Light.

4. Drink the Bud Light – See #3… What else are you to do when you are snowed in. We literally have a trash can full of empty bottles – we may have a problem.

5. Clean the Apartment – You can only sit around and stare at 580 square feet so long before it feels like the walls are strangling you. We tried to combat this by giving our apartment a good cleaning to make it feel bigger. At the end of the day, however, 580 square feet is 580 square feet. I think we are losing it.

6. Facebook Stalking – If you have posted anything on the book within the last 6 months, we have read it. Makes you think twice about leaving some of that stuff on there, doesn’t it?

7. Pestered Friends with Pointless Texts – If you have gotten a text message from us in the past couple of days and wondered what we were talking about, we apologize.

8. Watched People Get Stuck Outside – Right outside of our apartment is a slight incline, and most people who try to drive up in have gotten stuck. Our favorite was a guy in a Jeep Cherokee pulling a double-axle U-Haul through 30 inches of snow. Needless to say he didn’t make it. Now why it may seem cruel that we sit back and watch without going down and helping them, it is hard to feel sorry for them when the governor has declared a state of emergency and the National Guard is having to respond to 911 calls in their Humvee’s. You probably should have thought twice before deciding it was a good time to get out in the thick of it pulling a freaking U-Haul…

Even though we are going crazy, we feel very blessed to have power and a warm place to wait the storm out. Many people around the area are not as lucky. Below are some photos we have snapped from the two storms. While the pictures don’t really do it justice, you can get a good idea of the "Snowpocalypse."

New Obsession

I have a new obsession... Swaptree.com. It is a great website that lets you trade books that you are done reading for ones that you want to read. They match you up with people that will trade you their book for yours. All you have to do is pay shipping, and you can print the label from home. I have done a few trades and I am hooked! You should definitely try it... it's much better then paying $15 for a new book a borders and there is no need to get on a waiting list at the library for best sellers.

Dear John and Plain Truth are coming this week. I'll let you know what I think.
